Valuable Information Obtained at Rocky Mountain District Symposium

PNHS Board President Sarah Jackson and Executive Director Mark Dahlquist, attended the NeighborWorks® Rocky Mountain District Symposium June 22 to 24 in Denver, CO. These three days were filled with valuable information and was a chance to bring all Executive Directors and Board Presidents of the Rocky Mountain District together.
One of the highlights of the symposium was the opportunity Sarah and Mark had (see photo) to meet one-on-one with NeighborWorks® America CEO, Ken Wade. Wade attended the symposium to update attendees on the latest trends with our parent organization, as well as to get our input on what direction NeighborWorks® America should move over the next five years. This was necessary because NeighborWorks® is currently in the process of putting together its five year strategic plan. Many items were discussed, including the importance of homebuyer education and financial literacy, the importance of home rehabilitation programs, and the likely decreased funding of the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program and ideas to offset this by either private or fee revenue.
Much discussion also took place on the importance of Congress providing adequate funding to NeighborWorks® America, of which PNHS is a chartered member of. Ken Wade pointed out that there are three competitive advantages NeighborWorks® America has, which helps it rise above the rest: 1) a defined network (which includes approximately 230 affiliates like PNHS) of highly performing organizations located at the “street level”; 2) a “quasi”public entity (versus a government agency) who gets a congressional appropriation. Unlike HUD or other government agencies, NeighborWorks funding has more flexibility to it; and 3) a talented and hard working staff.
All in all, the symposium was time well spent. It is always great to have the opportunity to hear about and share best business practices with other NeighborWorks® organizations in our district and to meet the “top dog” of the national organization.
